    Not Your Regular Filipino Dish

My husband has been vaunting this restaurant he discovered at Serenda - Abe Restaurant. He couldn't forget the flavorful taste of the dishes and insisted that we simple must have dinner there one of these days.

One Sunday evening, when we couldn't think of any new place to eat at Market Market, we remembered Abe.

We ordered three main meals, even though we were only two. We started off with the Lechon Cubano Style. I don't know if I am exaggerating but when I had my first bite of the lechon, I totally forgot the other dishes we ordered. My fork kept on going back to the crispy thin skin yet tender meat. It had that distinctive Cebu lechon taste. (Those who have eaten the original lechon from Cebu knows what I am talking about - No sarsa needed!) When I finally had enough of the lechon, my interest turned to the Mutton Adobo. If you like garlicky flavors, you will like it too. The Pork Lengua Asado is a good first-time-tried meal. But it is not something you will be looking forward to be eating again. We also had to order their famous Bamboo Rice, though pricey (you have to be prepared to shell out rice worth P220 good for two only), its something you would like to try at least once.

The next in our agenda was the ... Dessert. The waiter tried to make the Mango Jubillee an exotic dessert but it was nothing to be rejoiceful about. It is a simple vanilla ice-cream with mango balls. However, the Maja Blanca was a different story. My husband was right when he said we shouldn't leave without trying it. The Maja Blanca would satisfy the palate of both who does not like sweets and who had to eat something with the taste of sugar at the end of the meal. The texture was creamy and had the right blend of coconut milk and sugar, topped with crunchy pinipig. Although it was my husband's dessert, I couldn't help not dip my spoon in his plate, making my slice bigger each time.

When we went to Abe, we had no reservations and were sitted right away. We had a quiet and pleasant dinner. The waiters were always within our reach and we waited within the sensible time frame for our food to be served.

Since they are offering Filipino dishes, do not order the dish you think you can cook becuase their prices are on the high side. Personally, I find the price of Abe reasonable since they offer a twist of what would have been a regular Filipino cuisine. The servings of the per dish could also be shared by two to three people based on what we have tried.

If you are on a budget and would still like to try Abe, order the meat dishes which is good for sharing, cut out the dessert and drinks (P65 per softdrink). You'll be cutting out on the unnecessary pounds too.

    Bad Service
    Gerry's Grill, Market! Market!

After dinner we decided to go on a night cap at Gerry's Grill in Market, Market.

Their service was horrible! We couldn't understand why it would take that long to service our beers as you don't have to cook it. The sisig was served in 10 mins but we had to wait longer for the beer.

You couldn't reach the waiters even though they were just roaming around, as if they were intentionally avoiding your hand signal.

    It's Worth Your Money
Hap Chan Tea House, Market! Market!
    Rating - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4

I was looking for a good Chinese restaurant to eat for our company night out. Because of the numerous good internet reviews I read about Hap Chan, I had to try it for myself.

Service was great! Waiters were fast and accommodating. Our orders arrived within 5 to 15 mins.

Food was generally delicious. The Broccoli with Garlic was one of the best I tried. The flowers were fresh fluffy bright green covered with crunchy tasty garlic. I am not a fan of Buchi, but there was something with their Buchi that made me a convert. (am starting to miss it already). For the figure conscious the Steamed Fish Fillet gives you the light feeling without sacrificing the flavor. If you are one of those who are adventurous, you can try the Hot Shrimp Salad. Its like a fruit salad made into a meal. The Spareribs with OK Sauce, Spareribs with Tausi, and Yang Chow Fried Rice are worth mentioning too. The Pork Asado and Pusit with Salt and Pepper was just ok but not as good as I expected. It did not make any lasting impression. I would rather order it in another restaurant. The Lemon Chicken was the worst. I even regretted I ordered it. It tasted artificial. I thought I was the only one who noticed it but was not surprised when after dinner, it was the remaining dish left.

At least, the one not-so-good dish did not ruin the night. The staff was completely satisfied with the taste and servings; they were stuffed which was my main goal. They could hardly move and had a smile of satisfaction on their faces that made the P330 per head worth it.

Overall, I would go back to Hap Chan and recommend it but next time I know what I'll be ordering.
