The family decided to have dinner in Westgate, Alabang one evening and after going to each restaurant and scanning their menus, we thought to try Hula-Hula. We figured there’d be something for everyone.

I don’t know if the resto was just understaffed or they were simply inattentive. It took forever to get someone to come to the table. Its not that hard to miss a bunch of people flailing their arms in the air trying to get attention. When someone finally came to our table, I asked one of the staff what exactly a salmon sahimi and poke roll was. He said, let me ask if we have that. Oh no – that’s not a good sign. He comes back and says they have it. Great, but he didn’t really answer the question. I decided to let fate take its course and ordered it. To make things worse, he said “15 minutes to serve”. Whaaaat! 15 minutes to slice salmon? The staff proceeded to explain that all dishes to take 15 minutes to serve. Ok, I didn’t want to argue with that. I guess you can’t fail in preparing sahimi, but the roll was a disappointment. It tasted like day old soggy sushi which they attempted to revive by frying it.

We then ordered king crabs, which was great! We also tried the Davao Gulf and Balinese Feast Luau trays. It was more than enough for our party of 13. The Balinese Feast Luau came with very tasty barbeques. It was just odd to find mashed potatoes and kamote wedges beside the java rice. Again, the “15 minutes to serve” wasn’t really 15 minutes it was more like half an hour. By the time food got to the table, it wasn't hot anymore.

The place itself is small for a restaurant which serves its feasts on giant trays. The kitchen is on the second floor, and indoor dining is cramped and restrooms need more attention. For a place which serves king crabs, you’ll be expected to use your hands, but there was no soap in the wash area.

The hawaiian concept is great but something gets lost in the execution.

Alba's lunch buffet never disappoints. They serve all their signature dishes and offers a good selection for you to choose.

Although the place is a bit small, its cozy enough to be enjoyable.

Hossein's is one of my most favorite restaurants in Manila. However, i've reserved it for very special occassions because they are a bit pricey.

Food never fails to exceed expectations!!

If you are looking for a more up-town version our pinoy favorites Travel Cafe offers some interesting choices. Just don't expect to be served the traditional sizes or quantities. In a nutshell, average.

    another disappointment
    La Maison, Greenbelt 5

I visited the newly opened La Maison at the Podium in Ortigas on Aug. 22 after reading some of the mixed reviews about its other branches. I was sorely disappointed.

The staff were not attentive. I had to flail my arms up to get anyone's attention. When I got someone to discuss the menu, he didn't know any of the descriptions on the menu. The fellow had to keep asking someone else what a certain sauce was, what a particular dish was, etc.

As with some of the other reviews, yes, I agree that the ribs are a disappointment. The chicken wings were sweeter than any dessert I've had in a long time. The Norweigan salmon was salted beyond redemption.

The only good thing about the meal was the appetizers, some mushrooms and gambas. I figured that no one can go wrong with mushrooms.
