Oh, i just love this restaurant. I am a Delta flt attendant and was visiting loved ones in Manila. THe minute I landed in MNL, my cousins picked me up and off we went to Cafe Juanita. The Sunday lunch buffet was to die for. I had three plates and met the owner of the restaurant who is a retired physician whom my cousin knows as he is also a doctor. I would go back to that restaurant the next time I visit MNL. That place will be my first stop....again! I would have wanted ube ice cream on their halo halo...but the ginataan was just awesome.....!!!! christine from orlando

hmm, i've been to this place a few times and each time there's one thing that's always consistent: great "homecooked" comfort filipino food.

one thing that's NOT consistent is the quality of their service! there are times they are just so slooow. one time we had to wait 15 minutes for water and another 15 minutes to get our bill. i think this is your typical slow-fare food. don't come here if you're in a rush to get somewhere after.

but i will just talk about my most recent visit, which was the most pleasant one. it's unbelievable how popular this place is! monday lunch and it's jampacked! it's important that you make a reservation and if you want to be surrounded by lace, christmas lights, old chandeliers, kitchy decor and just a huge variety of dust collectors, ask for a table on the first floor.

took my family here and we all enjoyed it. as other reviewers mentioned, this place is reminiscent of a fortune teller's home. i kept expecting manang bola to appear from the corridor saying "baaa be biii bo buuuuuu!". most of the stuff here's for sale, too.

must try: kare-kare (sauce is thick and creamy, perfect just as "ulam" with garlic fried rice) - the ox tail is so tender that it slides off the bone, fried lapulapu with tamarind sauce (this dish may sound simple but it's really so flavorful and addicting!), catfish with mango salad, tom yum soup (very good! sweet & spicy) and the sugpo sa gata (there are only about 5 pcs there).

we also ordered the beefsteak tagalog which is nothing to write home about (tasted too much like knorr with calamansi and sugar).

in previous visits i tried the calamari and caesar salad. those weren't bad, too (although i know i've had better ones). i heard the crispy pata is one of their specialties. i am looking forward to eating that in my next visit.

for dessert, try their cassava cake. it's not a big slice but it's dense enough to share. i don't eat much of "rice" delicacies but this one is memorable! the salty cheese grated on top compliments the slightly sweet/caramel-y taste of the cassava.

cafe juanita would make a great date place. especially if there are lulls in conversation, you can always start talking about the items on display: antique statues, vintage plates, glassware, to travel souvenirs, etc...

i like going to cafe juanita even if it's a little bit out of the way. it's something different.

it's easy to get to there: along shaw (going to the direction of pasig), turn right at pioneer st. go straight about 80 meters, 1st corner turn left (this is the corner of Jollibee Pioneer center) where you'll enter thru a guard house. keep going straight for about 100 meters then you'll see cafe juanita on the left side.

    Ambiance vs. Food

I had dinner at Cafe Juanita just an hour ago and I must say that its interiors charmed me. It is quaint, quaint, quaint --- like an eccentric aunt's boudoir or an aging fortune teller's salon. However, since it is a restaurant now (if memory serves me right, it started as a gallery/curio shop) I should give my eight pesos' (2 cents at current exchange rate) worth on its food and service. I had "Laguna Fish" aka crunchy fried tilapia on a bed of crispy fried noodles with diced tomatoes and onions on the side as dip. The presentation was impressive --- it looked like a sculpture--- but frankly, the texture was redundant for me: too crunchy! Maybe it was the room's cold temperature or maybe it took a while for me to dig in but spearing and eating the fish proved to be a challenge. Greens on the side or sauce to drizzle would have toned down the crunchiness.

It was a Saturday night and the place was packed so it took a while to get the waiter's attention despite the bell provided for such purpose. How do waiters know which table rang for service? :-)

I would like to try their specialties, the kare-kare and toffee pudding. I'll give Juanita another chance... perhaps on a less hectic day .

Even as you park your car on the street in front of the restaurant at 11:30 a.m., the security guards will ask you if you have a reservation. That's how popular the Cafe Juanita Sunday buffet is. The place is packed, interestingly, with a largely older crowd. I guess it's the senior citizens who most appreciate this type of food and this type of decor: retro funky bric-a-brac.

The buffet spread included sinampalukang manok, lechon kawali, lumpiang shanghai, fried tilapia, embotido, adobo, dinuguan, chicken teriyaki, beef mechado, boneless bangus and kare-kare. Everything was very, very, very well executed, but in the final analysis rather boring.

The entire experience reminded me of those fiestas long ago in the provinces when we went to the houses of our grandparents and grand-uncles and grand-aunts to eat the same food everywhere. Sadly I think Cafe Juanita is extremely popular, not because the food is exciting or spectacularly good (it isn't), but because high-level home cooking isn't being done in homes anymore.

    Cafe Juanita

Finally, my family and I got to try Cafe Juanita. It's an eclectic place with an eclectic menu.
The restaurant has this cozy feel that makes you want to stay longer than necessary. It is surrounded with interesting things that are for sale (yey!).
Each table has a bell that you ring when you need a server. Even if the place was fully packed that time, our call was promptly addressed.
    Prices are really reasonable.
Among the dishes we ordered, these stood out:
    1. Pasta Filpina. It's a creamy angel hair pasta with crab fat as a sauce base.
    2. Laing Bicolano.
    3. Sisig on Tofu. An interesting take on incorporating healthy food items to sinfully delicious dishes.
    Must try desserts:
    1. Cassava cake. Served warm, not too sweet (for me, that is.. hehe). It's not like the cassava cakes I've had before. They made the top part soft... I like it this way.
    2. Mini turon. The turon are really small and there are only 3 per order. The bananas are wrapped in lumpia wrapper, fried, then dipped in caramel, and topped with sesame seeds. There is a hint of ginger... yum.. I'm coming back for more!
    3. Toffee pudding served with vanilla ice cream. At first the sweetness of this dessert exceeded my limit. I thought I will only have a spoonful of it. But then the aftertaste of butter hits me. It gave me tingles that I could not stop myself from finishing the whole slice!

    Tip: Make a reservation.
