    Not Friendly to Big Groups

Don't even bother reserving a space for a big group. I called to reserve an area for 25 people because I was going to hold my league's fantasy draft there. The person I spoke to said she'll call me back within a week to confirm but she never did. I called after a week to ask if I my reservation was accepted and the person I spoke to (different person) said that there's a minimum of Php800 / person for big groups for the day I wanted. So on top of the poor service (no call to confirm) they have this lame policy. I'll just take my business elsewhere.

the steak is not so good, actually bad. the steak has a chewy, "thready" texture. i can't actually describe the "thready" texture but it would seem that the meat has many fibers that sometimes get stuck in between our teeth which we do not experience when we eat steaks at other restos. however, the other items on their menu like the salads were fine but because of their steak, i will not be going back to this resto anymore.

food in texas roadhouse grill is a little dismal. there's another american style resto - about 5 minute walk from this restaurant and if wanted to eat typical american food, i think i'd make the extra 5 minute hike.

but there are a few memorable menu items from this restaurant: beef and mushroom skillet & the roadhouse salad.

i don't want to sound harsh but i think you're better off ordering items from the starter menu where dishes are not easy to mess up (chips & salsa, buffalo wings, crispy calamari).

however! if you just want to chill out after a hard day's work (5-thirsty), texas roadhouse is a great venue for hanging out (sit outside to enjoy cool evening breezes & for good people watching). there are free peanuts in every table (have to shell yourself, so there won't be any Reuben from Along Came Polly moments here) to go with those tall ones.

Ambiance was perfect but the place was a little too small. If it's a weekend or a holiday better have the place reserved ahead of time (or go during lunch on a weekday).

    The good stuff:
Crispy Chicken Tenders - true to its name
    Roadhouse Salad to share
    Crispy Calamari
    Grilled Pork Chops

    Servers were great too.

    SamIAm Goes Texan

Just happened to have friends over from the States and quick as a wink, one of them fell victim to a sensitive stomach, days after their arrival. Based in the Fort area, I discovered that they had been "subsisting" on fast food outlets at Market Market. Poor souls had no idea that right across the road, a whole different set of food and shopping options waited.

So, my sick friend's lunch request: American Food [people find comfort where they will, even if it's based on ... well, nothing]. At Serendra and High Street, they nixed Friday's and the like. We settled on Texas Roadhouse Grill.

As with most American food franchises, the service crew was well trained in the whole meet-and-greet-I'm-your-server shpiel. I cringed when the greeter messed up one of her lines and actually started over (memorized much?)!

The ambience is a little Montana log-cabin, woodsy and dark. But quaint. We sat in one of the booths close to the entrance, but SamIAm also goes by the name TallI'mNot, so we had to move because the seats were too low. There are more booths at the back, better chair heights too.

We ordered Texas grilled prawns that are served ala Thermidore. The mixture was creamy, cheesy and not bad. The buttered vegetables were fresh, just the right crunch. The rice was a funky Mexican spice fried, a little dried out or undercooked. Better off ordering fries on the side.

My friend had a burger. He says it was okay. I'll take his word for it.

Another ordered Beef Medallions. She ordered it medium well. It came back with just the right color, but it was rubber-bone chewy. She looked like she was going to pull a jaw muscle.

Overall, the experience only reinforced what I've always believed about casual fast-dining experiences. These are NOT the places to go to for a good piece of steak!! No.no.no.no. I should have dissuaded my friend from ordering it but when you have your mind set on steak . . .

The staff was smart enough to offer to replace the steak when they noticed that it had hardly been touched. The manager apologized and said his staff should have informed us that beef medallions are always served Medium and not medium-well, to keep them soft. Perhaps, but I've learned the hard way that the best steaks are to be found elsewhere.

The apologies were sincere enough, although someone mumbled that in the States we would have gotten the dish for free.

    That's my take. SamIAm's rating: Hard Ham : )
