The crew was extremely inattentive. Their rib-eye steak was poorly cooked but bland, their Norwegian Salmon was ok but they went overboard with the rosemary, their chocolate cake tasted cheap, and they served us an over-ripe mango shake.

Not to mention that its awfully expensive. Take my word for it, don't go to this particular branch. (BTW, I've noticed that there are a lot of reviews here reviewing La Maison but not the one in Greenbelt 5)

    Sometimes Impressions Don’t Last

My first impression of the restaurant La Maison in one word was “expensive.” A friend disabused me of this notion by saying they offer meals for a group of people which are budget friendly. Being creatures of habit, my friends and I keep going back to our favorite Greenbelt 5 restos John & Yoko and California Pizza Kitchen, always relishing our usual orders. It was only recently when I was out with my mom & daughter that I felt adventurous enough to veer from these favorites and give La Maison a try.

Located at the 3rd floor of Greenbelt 5, my mom was a bit surprised to find some restaurant at this level. It was early Sunday evening and there were only two other tables occupied by couples when we arrived. Upon getting the menu, I barely read the choices for appetizers, soups, salads and steaks and zeroed in on the section labeled “for sharing” which offered good selections on ribs, seafood and chicken. The menu offerings with their accompanying one liner descriptions all looked tempting, making it difficult for me to decide what to order. Since there were only two of us adults, the seafood platter was out of the running even if it was enticing since we wanted to try a broader selection. We ended up ordering half a portion each of La Maison ribs and their version of fish and chips.

When our orders came, I was pleasantly surprised at the large servings. Even half an order was really good for sharing. The place touted ribs, steaks and seafood as their specialties and they did not disappoint on the ribs and seafood part that we tried. We are not steak lovers so we passed up on that. The pork ribs were tender, juicy and flavorful even without the sauce. I found the honey bourbon sauce too sweet for my taste. I suddenly longed for Racks steak sauce to accompany these tasty ribs but had to settle for Knorr seasoning. I alternated the accompanying sauce with Knorr seasoning to offset the cloying sweetness. I had a side order of garlic rice which was the best accompaniment for the ribs to sate my hunger.

As for the fish and chips, the fries are those you could expect in other dining places. But the fish, wow! One bite and it seemingly melts in your mouth. It tasted divine, prompting my mom to recall what we had ordered. It was just plain fish and chips on the menu but it was a delight to the taste buds. It had four different sauces, two of which we dismissed: the hot sauce and curry. The other two we wiped clean were the one which looked like it had pesto and the other which looked like sandwich spread but which did not taste at all like sandwich spread.

I almost forgot… for starters, they served free black bread that were to be dipped in olive oil and vinegar. I found the black bread unusual and worried that some would get stuck between my teeth, so when I smile… you get the picture. Its dark color, however, did not deter my brave little girl who chomped them down unhesitantly.

To illustrate how generous the servings were, we were able to finish three quarters of the fish. Amara took care of the fries which were one of her favorite snacks. Thankfully, they made her settle down and stop banging on the table and throwing her toys from her high chair. We were able to bring home one and a half slabs of the ribs (there were two enormous slabs for half a serving). It’s very satisfying to get value for your money.

La Maison taught me that some impressions don’t last. We will definitely go back.

P.S. When we did go back a few weeks later, we ordered the fish and chips again. They changed the fries to potato wedges but what’s a bit disappointing was the fish was not the same melt-in-your-mouth good although it was still good enough. The second time around, we ordered desserts which were, again, very affordable. For those who want to satisfy their sweet tooth, I recommend passing on the soft drinks or juices and trying their sweet concoctions to end your meal. They were not to die for but were okay.

overall my first dinner with la maison was pleasant. their staff was very attentive to the diners needs but not over bearing.
the food we tried their ribs only 540php for 2, we also had the black rye bread to start with - i loved the balsamic vinegar that came with it. we had complementary mussels in creamy wine sauce (loved the sauce)which i finished all by myself. it was yummy.
i will come back to try their steak and other dishes on the menu. the garlic potato wasn't something i was fond of, they were thinly sliced potato fried/sauteed and then crushed fresh garlic ( a lot of 'em) were sprinkled on it. had to pick it out.

also, there were only a few tables for the hungry tummies, not enough room.
one thing puzzled me as to how in the world a dish named 'barkada' landed on a french named resto? hmmm... anyway , i will be back for more.

    A Case of Multiple Personalities

To cut to the chase, the food last Sunday night at La Maison at Greenbelt 5 looked and tasted very much like good hotel food. Granted, I'm referring to 4-5 star hotel food and all the associations that come with that: well presented, subtle play of color between the main dish and its sidings, and that ever present feeling in your gut that the meal lacks salt . . . or something you can't put your thumb on (flavor??).

We were a big group so we ordered the barkada servings of a seafood mixed plate (sole fillet, calamares, baked tahong, butter & garlic shrimp), the seafood marinara, seafood alfredo and the baby back ribs. I really like the idea of barkada servings, one barkada order alone can serve up to 3 people or even more if you order more than one dish. The seafood was as I said, like hotel food. Cooked just right but nothing to rave about. The ribs were falling-off-the-bone tender but the meat doesn't really stand on its own, best to use the barbecue sauce that comes with the dish. Still, I was a little impressed with how soft the meat was, hard to find in a restaurant setting.

The service was more than adequate, very early days Friday's-ish where they seem to be falling over themselves to be helpful and engaged. This was a Sunday night, Greenbelt 5, and the mall and restaurant were almost empty, so I would expect nothing less than great service.

So here's the thing. The name of the restaurant is French for home, or apartment or dwelling. Honestly it doesn't really exude a homey feel, French home or any other "home" for that matter. The ambiance is a little too stiff to be called "The Home" but it is a pretty good first-date destination.

But here's the thing. It's a mix between a bistro, country kitchen and ... modern fusion restaurant. They serve countrified black rye bread but their dishes are on the modern-fusion side. The name of the restaurant is French but they embrace the fact that Filipinos like to center serve/share. So the word "barkada", is really on the menu. Some of the menus are written on chalkboards in French bistro style but the staff sang "happy birthday" in Friday's clap-and-cheer style for my brother-in-law.

So no wonder that SamIAm is a little confused. The birthday fudge and sung greetings were appreciated, but song-and-clap numbers in Greenbelt 5, you are going against my Mall World-Order!
    : ) I kid.

SamIAm's take: IF I worked in Makati and wanted to have lunch with office-mates I'd definitely come back. . . but I don't work in Makati.

    Steak-Lovers Date Place

My steak-loving sweetheart and I celebrated our 1st "monthsary" the other day and I wanted to go to a place that was:
    > both relaxing and beautiful, without being too pretentious or stiff
    > had a great rib eye steak (my honey's favorite), without the roadhouse/cowboy steakhouse ambiance
    > had other good selections for non-steak lovers
    > and, of course, had a good price.

I found it all at La Maison in Greenbelt 5. It was the first time that we ate there and the steak was just beautiful to behold and tasted wonderful! Even I liked it. The service was good; very polite and helpful staff. The ambiance was quiet and cozy, stylish but relaxed. Perfect for a date.

The overall we really had a great dining experience.

Something that I would like them to improve on would be having more variety and larger portions for the side dishes for the steaks, and including sidings as part of their barkada/family packages. It might also be a good idea to give out discount/freebie cards/coupons for the next visit to guests, and to give out some token item to guests who are there on a special occasion. When I made reservations I did mention that it was the first time that we were going to eat at their place and we were celebrating our first anniversary (monthsary...I know...I fibbed). I was secretly hoping that they would give us a little something like a scoop of ice cream or a discount or anything to help us celebrate...but alas there was none. That didn't really ruin the evening for either of us, but I think it would have made me want to go back there even sooner.

I visited the newly opened La Maison at the Podium in Ortigas on Aug. 22 after reading some of the mixed reviews about its other branches. I was sorely disappointed.

The staff were not attentive. I had to flail my arms up to get anyone's attention. When I got someone to discuss the menu, he didn't know any of the descriptions on the menu. The fellow had to keep asking someone else what a certain sauce was, what a particular dish was, etc.

As with some of the other reviews, yes, I agree that the ribs are a disappointment. The chicken wings were sweeter than any dessert I've had in a long time. The Norweigan salmon was salted beyond redemption.

The only good thing about the meal was the appetizers, some mushrooms and gambas. I figured that no one can go wrong with mushrooms.

We tried this restaurant as it came with a very good referral of the original La Maison in Cebu City. We ordered the Gambas ala Maison for appetizers and two dishes for our entrees namely the Barkada Ribs and the Dover Sole Fillet. They also served a complementary bread platter with a balsamic vinegar-olive oil dip for starters.

The verdict: The Gambas was very good. The Dover Sole Fillet was slightly toughened by a crisp outer crust- must have been over baked or toasted. But the spices and the meat was good, slightly Sicilian- with hints of the flavors of bell pepper and freshly cracked black pepper. The ribs wasn't the best in town. they were okay, but they could have been more tender.

For dessert, we had the Chocolate Lover's Cake- a dark chocolate cake, almost flourless in its richness and density.

The elevated portion of the resto is not cool. I remember we requested the staff that we wanted a transfer coz the aircon is not working/reaching that area. We ordered a Barkada Ribs and Seafood Bounty. The Barkada Ribs was quite disappointing coz it only consist of 4 pieces (I think, 2 beef, 1 lamb and 1 chicken). But hat's off to the baby back ribs. So tender! The Seafood Bounty was OK. The service crew here is very attentive. La Maison, Greenbelt 5

I arrived at this restaurant very excited because their menu seemed varied and very nice. However, my family and I were disappointed and they do not want to go back.

Though the service was eager to please, they did not know much. We had to ask the staff multiple times for things. We also asked which of their steaks we could get that did not have too much "litid" because the little kids don't like it. The staff member then answered, "Ah maam, rib eye." Rib eye is the steak with the MOST litid. The chef was then called out who told us to get the fillet mignon instead.

The steak was not up to par. It had a sort of rubbery texture and its taste was indistinguishable. The mashed potatoes served as a side dish tasted like they came out of a box.

We also made reservations, yet were placed in a cramp area next to a wall.
